CHS, DeZavala, and AJJH Ring in the New Year

 Channelview ISD Bond Update

2019 was both an exciting and crucial year for Channelview ISD as we closed out on a decade of hard work and made preparations to be even more successful in the new decade. After voters approved the bond proposal in May, the district quickly began the multiphase process of planning, designing, and constructing replacement schools, renovations and additions to existing schools, and other essential projects. Since the last update in September, progress has not slowed. District administrators and the Board of Trustees have remained committed to seeing these projects through and providing the best for our students. With input from the design committee, the architects, and design consultants, the district has been able to make key decisions and finalize plans.

Implementation of the 2019 Channelview ISD bond program began with the proposed upgrades to Channelview High School, which was separated into two packages, and the replacement school for DeZavala Elementary. The schematic designs for CHS and DeZavala were officially approved by the Board of Trustees before the end of the year and both projects progressed into the next phase, known as design development. In design development, each project’s scope is realized with input from teachers and others who will be utilizing the space. This is an opportunity to ensure everything from floorplans to furniture is tailored to meet the needs of that space. The CHS team has been diligently assessing what CTE equipment, technology, and furniture is needed, while maximizing the use of existing resources in combination with new. The DeZavala team has been refining every custom aspect of the new elementary school. Renovations for Alice Johnson Junior High were simultaneously approved, and the project joined CHS and DeZavala in design development.

CHS Package 2, which includes the athletic and site renovations, has reached 100% completion in the construction documents phase and the project will go to bid at the end of January. The construction documents phase for CHS Package 3, the building additions and renovations, is set to reach 50% completion by the end of January.

“It’s been so exciting to see these projects go from conceptual ideas to real designs and concrete plans. In this next year, we will get to see the product of everyone’s hard work even more tangibly. I’m grateful to all who have given their time to help us make the best decisions possible for our students and their futures,” said CISD School Board President Patrick Lacy.

“We take each step in this process very seriously and that is why it’s so important for us to have stakeholder involvement and accountability. We are thankful for the community’s trust and look forward to seeing this work come to fruition in the form of beautiful facilities and learning environments for our students,” Superintendent Greg Ollis added.

Cobb and Schochler’s replacement school is the next project to begin the design process. It is scheduled to start in early spring, followed closely by Aguirre Junior High, Harvey Brown, Crenshaw, Hamblen, and McMullan Elementaries.
